Kerry Packer: A Mad Lad of Marketing

By Jordan Michaelides
Kerry Packer, Mad Lad of Marketing

This is my first video analysis within a series I have decided to call “Mad Lads of Marketing”, with Kerry Packer easily being the first person I had in mind. (Inspired by Count Dankula)

Kerry is considered to be one of Australia’s most powerful media proprietors of the twentieth century. Which is no surprise given he came from an equally powerful family.

Within Australia, the Packer family are known for owning a controlling interest the Nine television network and the Australian Consolidated Press.

Outside of Australia, Packer was best known for founding World Series Cricket.

“… If anybody in this country doesn’t minimise their tax, they want their heads read…”

Kerry Packer

At the time of his death, Packer was the richest and one of the most influential men in Australia. In 2004, Business Review Weekly magazine estimated Packer’s net worth at A$6.5 billion.[Wikipedia]

I think that in a very conservative time, Packer was actually unusually frank and overt in the way he spoke for someone in the business world.

Regardless of where you sit on the Packer family, you cannot deny the impact Kerry had on the media and sporting landscape.

Watch the video below to learn why I think Kerry is a true Mad Lad.
